2017 saw Capel CC join in with the ECB All-Stars program, a nationwide initiative to get more youngsters involved in cricket. Anthony Birch and I attended some pre-season meetings run by the ECB and immediately saw All-Stars as a great opportunity to continue getting the youngsters of the Capel and other surrounding villages down to the Rec to enjoy cricket. Ant and I listened to information from the ECB telling us that the popularity of cricket amongst UK youngsters has declined in the last few years but you would never have guessed it if you came down to the Capel Rec on a Friday evening this summer. Our group of 25 Capel All-Stars enjoyed the glorious early summer weather taking part in games such as Volcanoes and Craters, Lost in Space, Avoid the Alien and let’s not forget Rapid Rocket Bowling whilst parents were wither cajoled to joining in or were allowed a moment to relax under the trees with Prosecco in hand. We look forward to running it again this year and bringing on a new band of parent helpers to continue the fantastic volunteer network that we enjoy at Capel.
